Could You Be Suffering From Skin Cancer?

Beauty & Fashion Blog

Skin cancer is a serious and sometimes even deadly condition that affects many people in the United States. Fortunately, though, in most cases, skin cancer can usually be easily treated as long as it is caught in the early stages. For this reason, it is important to be aware of the warning signs of skin cancer, especially if you are at a higher risk for skin cancer due to heredity or other factors. That way, you can monitor your body for any of these signs and, if you notice them, you can seek help from a qualified doctor before the problem, if one does exist, has a chance to worsen.

Persistent Skin Changes

First things first, understand that any changes in your skin should not be ignored. Skin does not just change for no reason whatsoever.

Thus, if you notice that you have a new skin growth, such as a bump or a sore, that persists, definitely check in with a doctor. It could be that this mark is just a simple bruise or even a non-cancer related skin condition. However, you will not know for sure or have peace of mind until you see a doctor.

The old adage of "better safe than sorry" definitely qualifies in this situation!

Strange Shapes

Another indicator that you may be suffering from skin cancer or that a formerly benign mark or mole has become cancerous is if it changes in shape.

Typically, cancerous lesions have an irregular, non-symmetrical shape, so if you notice any strangely shaped marks, it is time for a checkup.

Again, not every mark of this type will prove to be dangerous, but it is always better to know for sure. You lose nothing by visiting the doctor, and you stand to lose a lot if you don't, so make the smart choice.

Increased Risk

Even if you don't happen to notice any of these signs in yourself, if you are someone who has an increased risk of skin cancer, it is smart for you to get regular  checkups in which your skin is checked for the early signs of skin cancer. People at an increased risk for skin cancer include:

  • Excessive exposure to UV light, including tanning beds
  • Frequent sunburns, even if they occurred during childhood
  • A family history of skin cancer
  • Being fair-skinned
  • Having moles
  • Exposure to radiation

Remember, you can never be too careful when it comes to protecting yourself from skin cancer, so be aware of the risks and the signs, and never hesitate to see a doctor when you're unsure about whether or not skin cancer has developed.
