No Pain, No Shave: 7 Ways To Make Waxing Less Painful

Beauty & Fashion Blog

Now that you've purchased your first waxing kit, you are probably tempted to try it right away. The truth is that there are a few ways to prepare for waxing at home. Waxing has a reputation for being a painful process, but it does not have to be when you take a few steps to prepare.

1. Cool Down the Wax First

When you are waxing more sensitive areas, like the bikini line, hot wax can feel much more intense. Make sure to allow the wax to cool down before applying it to the area. Otherwise, the pain may come from the burning rather than the waxing itself.

2. Spend Some Time Getting Flexible

A yoga session a few times a week could actually help you get into waxing positions easily if you will be using the kit on yourself.

3. Take Some Advil

A pain reliever or two before the big event will help to reduce some of the pain many people feel during a wax. Try this about half an hour before you plan to wax.

4. Keep Hair Grown Out Before a Wax

Your hair should be grown out before a waxing session. Otherwise, you might find yourself reapplying wax and strips to actually catch the hair. Longer hair catches on the strip much easier.

5. Avoid Allergies and Pain with Patch Tests

Test a wax and strip on one section of the skin to see if you have a reaction first. You should also do this before you wax the more sensitive areas, including the bikini.

6. Avoid Using Most Products on Waxed Areas

You may be tempted to apply moisturizer before the big event, but you should avoid this. Moisturizers make it more difficult for the hair to be caught by the wax and strips. Astringent is also a bad idea because it can tighten the pores. The tighter your pores, the more painful this process can be. On the other hand, you might also try exfoliating before waxing to help untrap hairs.

7. Numbing Cream Is Available

Still not feeling comfortable? Over-the-counter numbing cream is available if you are concerned about the pain. You can apply it just before you begin waxing.

Waxing at home is affordable and possibly easier than you think. Once you determine how to best handle the pain of waxing, you will feel like you own your very own day spa.
